Many women report being mistreated during labour, including loss of autonomy, being shouted at or ignored - this is more common among women of colour, those of lower socioeconomic status, and women under 30.

Educating ourselves about the rights of a birthing woman and her family, and knowing and communicating our preferences respectfully beforehand, is key to change. Good postpartum care also matters: studies show up to 1 in 7 women and 1 in 4 fathers suffer postpartum depression, rising to 1 in 2 fathers when the mother is affected, making support for the whole family important.
